Huge Turnout in Galway Primary Schools Cross Country PDF Print E-mail

100s of primary school children took to the field in Renmore on Tuesday to participate in the Galway Primary Schools Cross Country Championships organised by Galway AAI. Weather conditions held fine for the duration of the races which got underway with the 3rd/4th class girls 800m race shortly after noon.

The race was won convincingly by the Burke twins from Scoil Ui Cheatharnaigh, Ballinasloe with Michelle 1st, Veronica 2nd and Maeve Brannigan (Scoil Iognaid Galway) in 3rd place. The team event was won by Craughwell NS with 37 pts, Cregmore NS in 2nd place with 68 pts and Scoil Ui Cheatharnaigh in 3rd place with 75 pts. In the 3rd/4th class boys 800m race, Pádraic Hannon (Carrabane NS) took the individual gold in a battle to the end with Nicolas Sheehan (Oranmore Boys NS), followed by E O’Ceallaigh (Scoil Chaitríona, Renmore) in 3rd place. Craughwell NS took the team gold with a score of 41 pts, with Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh, Knocknacarra in 2nd with 51 pts and Scoil Chaitríona in 3rd with 57 pts.

In the 5th/6th class boys 1000m, a fine performance from E Stenson (Oranmore Boys NS) saw him take the gold medal ahead of Shane Fahey (St. Patrick’s NS Galway) and C Corcoran (Scoil Sheamais Naofa Bearna). Craughwell NS took the team gold with a score of 63 pts, with Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in 2nd place with 70 pts and St. Patrick’s NS 3rd with 97 pts. Linda Porter (Ballymana NS) had a fine run in the 5th/6th class girls race to take the individual gold with Maria Touhy (St. Oliver Plunkett’s Athenry) in 2nd and Kate Burke (Scoil Ui Cheatharnaigh) 3rd. Craughwell NS capped a fine day for the school by completing a clean sweep in the team competitions on the day, taking the gold medal with a score of 40 pts, with Baile Chlair Na Gaillimhe in 2nd place with 44 pts and Scoil Chaitríona in 3rd place with 99 pts.
