Two young Galway athletes made their international debut at the weekend in the Celtic Games International in Waterford, with Cathriona Farrell (Craughwell AC) representing Ireland in high jump and Eanna O'Cathai (GCH) in discus.

Widely touted as a stepping stone to international senior athletics, the Celtic Games is an annual event between Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Ulster. Two-thirds of the Irish athletes in action last week in the European Championships in Gothenburg all took part in the Celtic Games in their youth.

Farrell jumped 1.64m to tie with the Scottish athlete at that height but had to settle for the silver medal on countback - as the Scottish athlete had less attempts at earlier heights. Farrell's performance is particularly impressive because she has another year in the same age category in that event. O'Cathai, a relative newcomer to the sport, also had a fine performance taking the bronze medal in the discus with a throw of 38.9 metres.
