On a weekend that saw Sonia O’Sullivan receive the accolade of the greatest living Irish sportsperson, many of Galway’s finest athletes were in action at day 2 of the Galway Cross Country Championships in Dangan on Sunday.

In perfect running conditions, athletes of all ages put in the maximum effort in their attempt for individual and team success. The standard of competition was very high across all of the age groups, with close to 40 competitors in some of the races. The competition got underway at 1pm with the U10 girls race and U10 boys race, followed by U12, U14, U16, U18, Junior and Senior races. One hopes that the many young athletes who took part will retain their interest in the sport as they get older and perhaps emulate the achievements of the great Sonia O’Sullivan. The Senior Men’s race saw a strong contingent from G.C.H. get the upper hand on Athenry AC in winning the individual and team event, with Michael O’Connor, Gary Thornton and Ian Egan (all of G.C.H.) taking the top three positions. Full results of the day are as follows.
