Connacht Primary Schools Cross Country and Walks PDF Print E-mail

The cross-country season continued at the weekend with strong representation from Galway schools in both the boys’ and the girls’ finals of the Connacht Primary Schools Cross Country on Saturday in Calry, Sligo.

The 1000m races were held on difficult terrain, mainly uphill for the first 400m, downhill for the next 300m on solid dry ground, followed by a tough finish over the final 300m on wet marshy ground.

Jack Larkin from Scoil Fhursa in Galway put in a fine performance to win the 1000m boys race in convincing style. The girls 1000m race saw Clár DeBurca from Scoil Uí Ceithearnaigh in Ballinasloe and Sally Maughan, daughter of Mayo manager John Maughan, battle it out over the last 300m of the race with the Mayo girl just finding that extra ounce of energy to win the race by a single metre.

The team competition was tightly contested with Quay, Ballina winning the boys race with 63 points, followed by Creagh NS, Ballinasloe with 75 pts and Baile Chlair, Galway with 77 pts. Scoil Uí Ceithearnaigh, Ballinasloe won the girls competition with 85 pts, followed by St. Pats, Westport with 102 pts and Scoil Caitriona, Renmore with 153 pts.

Individual medallists in the boys’ race were as follows: 1 Jack Larkin, Scoil Fhursa, Galway; 2 Barry Dolan, Carrigallen NS; 3 Enda McManus, Geevagh NS, Sligo; 4 Fergal Durcan, Snugboro, Mayo; 5 David Mulhern, Kiltimagh; 6 Conor Daly, Creagh NS, Ballinasloe; 7 Paul Concannon, Brackloon NS, Athenry; 8 Jack Callaghan, St. Pauls, Castlerea; 9 Micheál Hannon, Carrabane NS, Loughrea; 10 Lordan Mac Aodha, Baile Chlair, Galway; 11 Eoin McCormack, Creagh NS, Ballinasloe; 12 Francis Conroy, Quay, Ballina.

Individual medallists in the girls’ race were as follows: 1 Sally Maughan, Scoil Rafteiri, Mayo; 2 Clár DeBurca, Scoil Uí Ceithearnaigh, Ballinasloe; 3 Aine Heslin, Rossan; 4 Aisling Moyles, Carn, Mayo; 5 Helena Mulligan, Rehins, Mayo; 6 Michelle Heslin, Rossan; 7 Mary Walsh, St Pats, Westport; 8 Emma Lopwther, Currabagan, Mayo; 9 Louise Reilly, Shrule, Mayo; 10 Finola Mulroy, Foxford; 11 Lorna Payne, Creagh NS, Ballinasloe; 12 Ashley McDonnell, Craughwell NS, Galway.

The cross-country races were preceded by the girls and boys race walking events.  The girls’ individual event was won by Tara Keogh, St Ronans, Roscommon, with Emma Moran, Balla in 2nd place and Deirdre Reynolds, St. Josephs, Mohill in 3rd place. The girls’ team event was won by Mercy Sligo with 29 points, followed by Mercy Westport with 54 pts and St. Bridget’s Ballinamore with 62 pts. Mercy Sligo had a clean sweep of the boys’ individual event  - with Fergus O’Boyle, Edward Conboy and MMichael Flynn taking the top 3 spots. They also took 1st and 2nd place in the team event, with St. Mary’s Drumlea in 3rd position.

Galway athletes are next looking forward to the first day of the Connacht Cross-Country that will be held in Sligo Racecourse at 1pm next Saturday 23 October.
