Galway Shine in Inter-County Cross-Country Relays PDF Print E-mail

The National Cross-Country Inter-County Relays for the U12 and U14 age groups took place in Athlone. Galway athletes put in some electrifying performances in the inter-county relays to take home two of the four titles on offer and one 2nd place.

The U12 girls’ team won their 4x500m relay in style with Claire Burke from Ballinasloe putting in an outstanding finish to pass the Co. Clare athlete almost on the finishing line and take first place for her County and team-mates Dora Gorman (GCH) and Craughwell trio – Sarah Helebert, Ashley McDonnell and Laura Mitchell. In the U14 girls’ 4x500m relay, Galway finished in 2nd place missing out on gold by a narrow margin despite an incredible effort from Irene Gorman of GCH in the final leg of the relay. The Galway team were Rachel Shaw (Athenry), Rachel Finnegan (Craughwell), Julie Larkin (Portumna) and Irene Gorman (GCH). Galway’s strength in the relays was emphasised by the U14 boys’ 4x500m team - who easily won their event, with the team being Niall Daly and Darragh McCormack (both Ballinasloe), Conor Caulfield (Athenry) and Ciaran Treacy (Portumna).



Senior athletes from GCH and Athenry were in action in Sligo at the weekend, competing in the Connacht Senior Cross-County Championships. Gary Thornton from GCH took first place in a time of 31:23, followed in 2nd by teammate Michael O’Connor in a time of 33:03. GCH took 2nd place in the team competition with 22 pts, with Athenry AC in 4th place with 61 pts. Galway took 2nd place in the inter-county event.



Also in action in Athlone at the weekend were juvenile athletes in National B Cross-Country for U11, U13, U15, U17 and U19 age groups. With 23 teams taking part in the U11 boys 800m, Ballinasloe took 3rd place with their team of Eoin McCormack (4), Ronan Daly (9), Pádraic McHugh (12), Sam Whelan and Evan Blake scoring 126 pts. They were followed in 5th place with a score of 156 pts by the Craughwell team comprising Jason Kennedy, Jack Raftery, Pádraic Tobin, Ross Haverty, Pádraig Hannon and Brendan Gallagher. In a crowded race U11 girls 800m with 28 teams taking part, Kate Burke (8) and Sive Brassil (18) from Ballinasloe led the Galway athletes home, with the Craughwell AC team taking 7th place in the team event with Siobhán Gardiner, Laura Porter, Orla McDaid, Sinead Gaffney, Rachel Mullins and Caoimhe Quill. Ali Burke from Ballinasloe & District AC and Shane Concannon from Craughwell AC put in the leading Galway performances in the older age groups, taking 5th place and 9th place in the U15 girls 1500m and U15 boys 2000m. Eoin Burke from Ballinasloe finished in 11th place in the U15 boys 2000m.
