Paul Hession switched from his more usual 200m event (in which he has already qualified for the European Indoor Championships in March) to the 60m sprint in the National Indoor Championships in Nenagh at the weekend.

Hession finished in 2nd place in the final with a time of 6.81s, just 0.06 of a second outside the qualifying time for this event in the European Indoors. Also in the medals in the National Indoors were Olive Loughnane (Loughrea) who won the 3k Walk in a time of 12:50.86, former Athenry AC athlete Martina McCarthy (DCH) who was 2nd in the 800m in a time of 2:11.80 and Regina Murphy (GCH) who was 3rd in the 800m in a time of 2:18.63. They were joined by Galway teenagers Gemma Hynes (GCH) and Ailbhe Darcy (Loughrea) who finished 1st and 3rd in the 200m B final in times of 25.66 and 26.90. Both athletes also made the final of the Senior Women’s 60m, with Darcy finishing in 6th place and Hynes in 8th place.

The high-profile Raheny 5 mile road race took place at the weekend, with Jerry Ryan (GCH) putting in a strong race to finish 3rd in a time of 24:06, tying on time with the 2nd place Kenyan athlete and only 6 seconds behind the 1st place athlete who was also Kenyan. Club-mate Martin McEvilly was the first athlete home in the over-55 category.
